Kingston Police Honours the 25th Anniversary of 9/11

Today, Kingston Police joins communities across Canada, the United States and around the world in commemorating the 25th anniversary of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. We remember the nearly 3,000 innocent lives lost, honour the extraordinary courage of first responders and emergency personnel, and reflect on the lasting impact of that day on families, communities, and the policing profession.

While the events of September 11 unfolded hundreds of kilometres from Kingston, their impact was felt deeply here at home. In the days and weeks that followed the attacks, members of Kingston Police travelled to New York City to assist New York City Police where needed so they could focus on the recovery and clean-up efforts at the World Trade Center site. Their willingness to answer the call for assistance exemplified the commitment of police officers to support one another in times of unimaginable tragedy.

Twenty-five years later, their service reminds us that policing extends beyond borders. In times of crisis, first responders come together through a shared commitment to helping others.

"There are moments in life that stay with you forever, and being part of a group helping after the September 11th attacks is one of them. I remember looking at the devastation and feeling a deep sense of sadness for everyone whose lives had been changed forever. I remember the faces of the first responders, many of whom were carrying on despite their exhaustion and grief. The sights, the sounds, the smell, and the overwhelming sense of loss are things I will never forget. There were moments when the weight of what had happened felt almost impossible to comprehend. I often think about the families who lost loved ones and the first responders who made the ultimate sacrifice.

I remember people lining the streets with signs of support for first responders as we headed to ground zero to help in any way we could. It was a reminder that policing is about serving people in their greatest moments of need. Being able to contribute, even in a small way, was a profound privilege. As we mark this solemn anniversary, Kingston Police recognizes the countless first responders, military personnel, volunteers, and recovery workers whose dedication in the aftermath of September 11 came at great personal sacrifice.
