City of Kingston and Kingston Police Reflect on Safe and Successful Homecoming & Fauxcoming Weekends

The City of Kingston and Kingston Police are thanking community partners, residents, students, and alumni for their collective efforts in helping ensure a safe and successful Homecoming and Fauxcoming season in Kingston.

Throughout October, a coordinated and integrated response involving Kingston Police, City of Kingston departments, Queen's University, emergency services, and regional policing partners supported the management of Homecoming and Fauxcoming activities. The collaborative approach focused on prevention, education, engagement, public safety, and enforcement where necessary.

While attendance during Fauxcoming was significantly higher than the official Homecoming weekend, the vast majority of students, alumni, and visitors celebrated responsibly and demonstrated a strong commitment to community safety. Organizers note that many attendees were cooperative, respectful of residents, and receptive to outreach and safety messaging delivered throughout the weekend by the Police Liaison Team (PLT) and community partners.

"Over the three weekends covered by the UDSI, City Bylaw Enforcement Officers and Municipal Special Constables worked with Kingston Police, Queen's University Security and other community partners to ensure everyone in the University District celebrated safely and responsibly. Even when gatherings became large, we were pleased to see students generally conducting themselves with cooperation and respect for each other, law enforcement and their neighbours, making it a much more positive experience for everyone."

Kyle Compeau, Director of Enforcement Services at the City of Kingston

Fauxcoming activities occurred on October 23 and 24 and drew significantly larger crowds than Homecoming. On October 23, large gatherings were observed on University Avenue and throughout the University District; however, crowd behaviour remained largely cooperative and no road closures were required.

On October 24, several house and backyard gatherings took place throughout the University District. As attendance increased on University Avenue during the day, a temporary road closure between Johnson Street and Earl Street was implemented to support public safety and effective crowd management. Later that evening, as crowd sizes continued to grow, a Nuisance Party was declared, and the roadway was again temporarily closed to facilitate safe crowd dispersal. The area was reopened once attendance decreased and normal traffic flow could safely resume.

Despite the size of the gatherings, there were no significant public safety incidents, a result largely attributed to extensive planning, proactive engagement, visible enforcement, and strong collaboration among community partners.

A key element of this year's response was the continued presence of the Police Liaison Team, whose members spent countless hours engaging directly with students, alumni, residents, and visitors. Through ongoing dialogue, education, and relationship-building, the team helped foster cooperation and voluntary compliance throughout the event period.

"We want to recognize and commend the students, alumni, and visitors who celebrated responsibly and responded positively to requests from police and community partners. The cooperation we observed throughout the weekend played an important role in maintaining public safety. We also extend our sincere thanks to the many partner agencies and organizations whose collaboration, planning, and support contributed to the safe and successful outcome of the weekend."

Chief Adam MacIntosh, Kingston Police

The City of Kingston and Kingston Police also wish to thank all partner agencies and organizations whose support contributed to the successful management of the events. This includes Queen's University, Kingston Fire & Rescue, Frontenac Paramedics, Municipal Bylaw Enforcement, Kingston Transit, Public Works, Kingston Health Sciences Centre, community support teams, and regional policing partners who assisted with operational planning, engagement, enforcement, and public safety efforts.

Together, these coordinated efforts helped maintain access for residents and emergency responders, support community well-being, and manage the impacts associated with large gatherings in the University District.

As students, alumni, and visitors continue to participate in university celebrations and community events throughout the year, the City of Kingston and Kingston Police encourage everyone to do so responsibly and with consideration for public safety. Gatherings that spill onto roadways or obstruct traffic can create safety concerns for pedestrians, motorists, residents, and emergency responders. By keeping streets clear and respecting requests from event officials and emergency personnel, individuals can help ensure celebrations remain safe, accessible, and enjoyable for all members of the community.

Although the 2026 Homecoming season marked the 100th anniversary of Queen's University Homecoming, the focus of all involved remained consistent: ensuring a safe environment for residents, students, alumni, visitors, and emergency personnel. The City of Kingston and Kingston Police remain committed to working collaboratively with community partners to support safe celebrations while reducing impacts on surrounding neighbourhoods.
