The Youth In Policing Initiative (YIPI) initiative offers employment with Kingston Police for youth 15-18 years of age who are attending school in the Kingston area. The program provides a positive paid work experience, on the job training, and mentorship opportunities.

Applying to the YIPI program

The YIPI programs runs twice a year, once during summer holidays and again during the school year. Applications to the program are accepted only at specific times and details on when and how to apply will be listed here at those times.

YIPI participant eligibility requirements

A youth must successfully complete a recruitment/background check process and must meet specific eligibility requirements to be accepted into the program.

  • Eligible to work in Canada
  • Between 15 and 18 years of age for the duration of the program
  • Must be a registered full-time student (in a secondary educational program) while in the program
  • Resident of Kingston Ontario

About the YIPI program

Students hired by the YIPI program will work in various sections of the Kingston Police service, support community initiatives and learn valuable life and employment skills. YIPI participants will also have a working relationship with a number of valuable youth-serving organizations in Kingston.

The program is designed to accomplish specific objectives for the youth involved.

  • Provide a safe and positive employment opportunity for youth from diverse backgrounds, who reside in at-risk communities and are reflective of the cultural diversity of the community.
  • Enhance relationships and partnerships between police and the communities they serve, by developing a positive working relationship.
  • Promote youth participation and exposure to the work environment through diverse, educational and productive work assignments with the police service.

This initiative along with, is part of an effort to coordinate program information and access services, for youth across Ontario.

Funding for the YIPI program is made available through the Ministry of Children and Youth Services.
