Kingston Police warn of ongoing “Grandparent Scam”
The Kingston Police are warning the public about an ongoing telephone scam known as the “grandparent” or “emergency” scam.
On April 28, 2026, an elderly victim was defrauded of $5,500 after they were led to believe their grandson was in trouble. In this instance a suspect attended the victim’s residence to receive the funds.
An attempt was then made by the suspects to have the victim send $100,000 via wire transfer to a gold store to purchase gold bars.
This scam typically targets seniors by leading them to believe their grandchild is in distress. In some instances, the victims are told their grandchild has been in an accident or arrested. The suspects often use generic terms such as “Grandma” or “Grandpa” and claim to have an illness to disguise their voice.
The call is then transferred to someone posing as a lawyer who demands money for bail. Victims are generally instructed to provide money to an individual who attends their residence or to send funds via wire transfer or by using courier services.
Police wish to remind residents that cash or wire transfer are never required for bail.
Tips to protect yourself:
· Never act alone under pressure. Scammers try to isolate you, so you don’t double check.
· Call a trusted family member immediately using a number you are familiar with.
· Break the secrecy rule. Being told “Don’t tell anyone” is a major warning sign.
Take a pause before making any decision, even a few minutes can stop a scam.
· Anyone who believes they have been targeted or victimized should contact Kingston Police at 613-549-4660 or report to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501 or file a report online.
