Kingston Police Remind Residents to Practice Water Safety
May 28, 2026
As warmer weather approaches and more people head to pools, lakes, rivers, and other waterways, residents are reminded to make water safety a priority for themselves and their families.
Every year, preventable drownings and water-related emergencies occur across Ontario. By taking simple precautions and remaining alert around water, many of these incidents can be avoided.
Important Water Safety Tips:
- Always keep children within arm’s reach in and around the water. Never leave a child unattended in a bathtub, swimming pool, lake, or river.
- Ensure children and weaker swimmers wear properly fitted lifejackets or personal flotation devices (PFDs).
- Never swim alone. Swim with others who know how to swim and can help in an emergency.
- Stay sober. Alcohol, cannabis, and drugs impair judgment, coordination, and reaction time, increasing the risk of drowning.
- Be aware of fast-flowing water, sudden drop-offs, and changing conditions in lakes and rivers. Even experienced swimmers can quickly get into trouble.
- Know your limits and be honest about your swimming abilities.
- Keep safety equipment and a phone nearby when using a backyard pool.
- Ensure everyone in your family learns basic swimming and water safety skills.
- When boating or participating in water sports, always wear a properly fitted lifejacket or PFD.
Water safety is everyone’s responsibility. By staying alert, prepared, and informed, residents can help ensure a safe and enjoyable summer around the water.
