Kingston Police Remind Drivers How to Properly Use a Zipper Merge
With construction season underway and lane reductions becoming more common across the city, we are reminding motorists how to properly perform a “zipper merge” to help improve traffic flow and reduce congestion.
A zipper merge occurs when two lanes of traffic merge into one. Drivers are encouraged to use both lanes fully until reaching the designated merge point, then take turns alternating into the open lane, similar to the way a zipper closes.
Despite common misconceptions, merging early can actually increase congestion, create longer traffic backups, and lead to unsafe driving behaviours.
Kingston Police are encouraging motorists to follow these tips when approaching a lane closure or construction zone:
- Use both lanes until reaching the merge point unless otherwise directed by signage
- Maintain a safe and consistent speed
- Take turns merging one vehicle at a time
- Allow space for other vehicles to merge safely
- Avoid blocking vehicles from merging
- Stay patient and avoid aggressive driving behaviours
Proper zipper merging helps reduce sudden braking, improves traffic movement, and can lessen the overall length of traffic backups in construction areas.
Drivers are also reminded to slow down in construction zones, obey posted signage, and watch for workers, pedestrians, and cyclists.
By working together and practicing safe driving habits, motorists can help keep traffic moving safely and efficiently throughout the construction season.
