Police charge local contractor with fraud

In November of 2025 investigators with the Kingston Police Criminal Investigations Division commenced an investigation into a local contractor after receiving complaints from several different parties.

Through the course of investigation, it was determined that a single accused who is listed as the owner and operator of The Oakwood Group Inc. knowingly made false representations to multiple families to induce payments for material, permits and labor collectively exceeding $586,000.

The accused misappropriated funds which included using them for personal construction projects. The accused also double deposited bank drafts to fraudulently obtain credit and then abandoned those bank accounts. Without justification, the accused failed to pay subcontractors by keeping deposits for themselves.

At this time the accused has not returned any funds to the families.

On February 3, 2026 31 year old Adam SHULIST, of Kingston was arrested and charged with four counts of fraud exceeding $5000, four counts of theft exceeding $5000, four counts of obtain money by false pretence exceeding $5000 and one count of obtain credit by false pretence exceeding $5000.
