Kingston Police remind the public to secure valuables while shopping due to increase in vehicle thefts

December 23, 2025

Kingston Police are advising residents to take extra precautions while shopping this holiday season following a noticeable increase in thefts from motor vehicles. Investigations indicate many of these incidents involve packages and personal items left visible inside parked vehicles.

Offenders may target vehicles in shopping center parking lots and residential areas, particularly when items such as shopping bags, electronics, purses, or backpacks are easily seen through windows. These incidents are citywide and not isolated to a specific area.

The public is reminded to help reduce the risk of theft by taking the following precautions:

  • Always remove packages and valuables from vehicles whenever possible
  • If items must be left in a vehicle, secure them in the trunk or out of sight
  • Always lock vehicle doors and close all windows

If you have been a victim of theft, individuals are encouraged to file a police report either by calling 613-549-4660 ext. “0” or by utilizing our online reporting tool which can be found at www.kingstonpolice.ca.
