During the overnight hours of August 17, 2025, and early morning hours of August 18, 2025, members of the Kingston Police Patrol Division arrested two individuals for impaired operation of a motor vehicle.
The first incident occurred on August 17, 2025, at 11:59 p.m. when officers observed a vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed in the area of Princess Street at Division Street.
The vehicle was subsequently stopped and upon speaking to the driver the officers noticed a strong smell of an alcoholic beverage on the driver’s breath. As well, the officers observed an open container of alcohol within the vehicle.
The 25-year-old driver of the vehicle was arrested and charged with impaired operation of a conveyance as well as impaired operation of a conveyance exceeding the legal blood alcohol concentration. The driver was later released with a future court date.
The second incident occurred on August 18, 2025, at 1:27 a.m. when officers observed a vehicle fail to stop for a stop sign in the area of Raglan Road and York Street. The driver of the vehicle provided a breath sample into an approved screening device under the mandatory alcohol screening legislation.
The driver was placed under arrest for impaired operation of a conveyance when results of the sample registered a “fail”.
The 34-year-old driver was charged with impaired operation of a conveyance as well as impaired operation of a conveyance exceeding legal blood alcohol concentration. The driver was later released with a future court date.
These incidents highlight that drinking & driving happens on any day or night of the week and that officers are continually on the lookout for impaired drivers. These incidents are also examples that Mandatory Alcohol Screening is being successfully administered by Kingston Police at all times, not just during designated RIDE programs.
