Major Crime Unit

The Major Crime Unit (MCU) investigates the most severe and complex cases. Homicides, cold cases, assaults involving serious bodily harm, home invasions, and missing person cases are some examples. However, they may be called on to assist with any number of cases that meet the threshold of becoming a major crime.

MCU Detectives receive high levels of specialist training in subjects such as interviewing techniques, as well as ‘best practices’ and ‘lessons learned’ from a variety of external partner agencies. MCU Detectives also typically have a broad range of investigate experience and expertise, often working in other Criminal Investigative units such as Sexual Assault and Vulnerable Sectors before joining the MCU team.

MCU Detectives write warrants, conduct interviews, and make arrests, but can call on Patrol, the Emergency Response Unit, or others when necessary. MCU Detectives also routinely liaise with outside agencies, including those at the municipal, provincial, and federal levels, as well as with international organizations such as the FBI and Interpol.

Do you have what it takes?

Successful candidates for MCU must have comprehensive investigative experience and demonstrated past success in solving a wide range of criminal investigations. They need be organized, detail oriented, thorough, and meticulous. Candidates must know how to balance their work life and their home life, due to extensive commitment often involved in investigating and solving these complex case.

Other qualities that are an asset include: an ability to look at an investigation from different perspectives, a life-long desire to learn, excellent writing skills, the ability to easily converse with persons from all backgrounds and life experiences, self-motivation and also be team-focused.
