Crime mapping Feedback:

Based on user feedback, we will further enhance the crime mapping tool. Our interactive crime mapping tool will provide you with better information as to what is happening in your neighbourhood.

Note: Information on Sex Offenders is not displayed, as the National Sex Offender Registry is not made public. For more information, please check Sex Offender Information Registration Act.

The Kingston Police previously published online weekly and monthly crime reports. Since October 2008, when the organization introduced its new crime mapping tool, "Kingston Crime", the weekly and monthly reports have been discontinued.

Kingston Crime provides you with our calls for service statistics in a geographical and interactive format. By clicking on the "View Crime Incident Data" link at the bottom of the Kingston Crime page, you will be provided with the same information in a list/table format for easy access and review.

The Kingston Police has long recognized the value of sharing information on community safety and security. To further community awareness and improve accessibility to calls-for-police-service occurring in the community, the Kingston Police has merged Geographic Information Systems technology with police calls-for-service data for user-friendly public consumption through the Kingston Police internet website, kpf.ca

The Kingston Police cautions against using call-for-service data to make decisions, or comparisons, regarding the safety or crime levels for an area. When reviewing Calls-for Service police data the following are things to consider:

  • These are incidents requiring police presence.
  • The data represents computer aided dispatch (CAD) final call types. These final call types are largely based on the information provided by a member(s) of the community to the Kingston Police Communications Center or Call Center and have attended by an officer to determine the final closing type.
  • Due to both stacked addresses (several incidents being reported within the same 100 block area) and locations that were not able to be geo-coded, the number of incidents identified within the geographic system may not accurately reflect the total number of incidents for the area. All data visualization on a 100-block geographic system should be considered approximate and attempts to derive specific addresses is strictly prohibited.
  • This data can be reviewed and discussed as part of coordinated (crime) prevention initiatives to support and improve community awareness and safety. Members of the community are encouraged to continue partnering and problem solving with the Kingston Police to support police-community goals and objectives.
  • The data can be used to measure changes in the level and types of incidents when comparing different time periods to the same geographic area.
  • CAD calls-for-service do not always equate to a criminal incident resulting in a report or arrest. Therefore the data does not include all offenses identified within the Canadian Center for Justice Statistics.
  • There may be more than one call-for-service for any given incident reported through the CAD system (e.g. several observers may call 911 after witnessing a motor vehicle accident, disturbance or criminal incident).
  • The data will sometimes indicate where an incident was reported versus where the incident occurred.
  • Densely populated areas with a high volume of foot traffic may have more reported incidents. This does not necessarily mean that more crime occurs in the area.

The included data can be summarized to include:

  • Incidents against Person: Robbery, Sexual Assault, Assault
  • Incidents against Property: Break and Enter Theft, Theft of Vehicle

  • The Kingston Police discourages data users from performing comparative analysis between different areas of the city based solely on the information provided by calls-for-service. This geographic information system does not provide a comparative analysis tool. Areas vary in size, population and density, making such comparisons difficult
  • This is considered preliminary incident response data and does not represent statistics submitted to the Canadian Center for Justice Statistics. The data is subject to change for a variety of reasons, including late reporting, reclassification of incidents based on offense types, errors and the discovery that some incidents originally reported as offenses may later be determined to be unfounded.
