Kingston Police warn residents regarding ongoing paving scam.

24-15821

The Kingston Police are warning residents to beware of a door-to-door paving scam that has targeted homeowners in several neighbourhoods this week. The suspects offer to repave the victim’s driveway at a steeply discounted cash rate, requiring payment up front. The suspects often state that they are doing work nearby which is why they are offering the discounted rate.

In the reports received by Kingston Police and City of Kington Bylaw Enforcement, residents have been approached and either work has been left incomplete or the paving is of poor quality.

In most cases, large piles of excavated asphalt and earth were left behind, often blocking the roadway. In one case, the pavers also severed utility connections to the victim’s home.

The suspects in these cases were described as having Irish or similar accents. The names used by the companies change frequently, so residents are encouraged to focus on the warning signs below. However, the following have been used in the past week: Trusted Paving and Paveright Asphalt.

Police have obtained video of one of the suspects. The male, who called himself Tony, spoke with an Irish accent. He is described as a Caucasian male, approximately 5’10”, short to medium dark blonde hair, and a medium to heavy build. (Image included below.)

Police urge caution when homeowners are approached in the following ways:

·         Contractors offering their services because they just happen to be in the neighbourhood doing work nearby.

·         Contractors offering a special deal because they have supplies left over from another job.

·         Contractors offering large discounts for cash deals.

·         A price for work that is too good to be true.

·         High-pressure sales pitches requiring you to act immediately.

·         A demand to pay for all or most of the work in cash before any work is completed.

·         Anyone selling services door-to-door.

Anyone who believes they may have been contacted by these suspects is asked to contact the Kingston Police at 613-549-4660 ext. 0.
