UPDATE - Police Seeking Assistance in Identifying Assault Suspect

A 25-year-old local man who assaulted a Good Samaritan on May 9 found himself in handcuffs thanks to an observant patrol officer.

 

On June 1, 2017 at approximately 6:45 p.m. a patrol officer heading to police headquarters for end of shift noticed a man matching the description of the May 9 assault suspect. The man was walking in the area of Division Street and Adelaide Street. The officer stopped the man to investigate, but after giving a false name and being questioned he fled on foot. The man was apprehended after a short foot chase.

 

The accused was transported to police headquarters where he was held to attend a bail hearing the following day. The accused was charged with assault, obstruct and two counts of breach probation.

On May 9, 2017 at approximately 3:45 p.m. the victim was at a store in the area of Princess Street and Bagot Street. The victim observed the suspect shoplifting from the store. When the suspect observed the victim taking photos of him outside the store, he ran up and punched the victim several times in the head.

 

The suspect is described as 5’9”, mid 20’s, wearing a black flat brimmed baseball cap, blue jeans, black shoes with white soles, a white and black plaid fleeced style jacket with a black hoodie underneath, black sunglasses with mirrored lenses and a blue/black knapsack with white lines. The suspect was with a second male who was not involved in the assault.
