Complaints

The Kingston Police are dedicated to ensuring the safety and security of our community while striving to uphold our core values of Respect, Integrity, Professionalism, Partnership, Leadership, and Excellence. All citizens are entitled to fair and impartial service from the police.

A concern may be able to be resolved by discussing the incident with a supervisor or officer within the Professional Standards Unit.  Citizens are welcome to attend in person or call Kingston Police Headquarters and simply have a conversation to clear up a question or complaint.  The Kingston Police would be pleased to discuss police actions and the laws or procedures that apply with anyone who believes that additional information would be helpful.

The Police Services Act governs the conduct of police officers in the province of Ontario and allows members of the public to file an official complaint.  The Office of the Independent Police Review Director (OIPRD) is responsible for receiving, managing, and overseeing all public complaints about municipal, regional, and provincial police in Ontario.  As a civilian oversight agency, the OIPRD makes its decisions independently of the police, the government, and the public.

The OIPRD accepts complaints about the following:

  • service complaints related to how effectively and efficiently a particular service performs its duties;
  • policy complaints regarding the rules and standards of a police service that guide how an officer delivers police services; and
  • conduct complaints about the behaviour of a police officer.

For additional information please visit www.oiprd.on.ca.

Here at the Kingston Police, we hold ourselves accountable and work every day to do our best; however, if you’re unhappy with the service you’ve received, you can let us know by:

  • visiting the Kingston Police Headquarters at 705 Division Street in Kingston and asking to speak with an officer in Professional Standards;
  • contacting our Professional Standards Unit by calling 613-549-4660 and asking to speak with an officer in Professional Standards; or
  • submitting a complaint directly through the Office of the Independent Police Review Director.  Submissions can be made online or by way of hard copy.  Hard copies are available at all police stations, or a request can be made for a hard copy to be mailed to you by e-mailing OIPRDcomplaint@ontario.ca.
